Normal and pathological fusion of vertebrae in bony fish - an 'evo-devo' study

The hypothesis is tested that 'normality' of vertebral fusion in evolution can provide us with insights into the pathological, ontogenetic process of vertebral fusion, through comparing zebrafish and Atlantic salmon. The study will be carried out via (1) histo-morphological research, (2) detection of spatio-temporal distribution of regulatory and structural molecules involved in the formation of vertebrae, and (3) organ cultures.
