Networking aspects of optical networks-on-chip for multi-chip computing systems

One of the promising energy-efficient solutions for inter-chip communication is using optical interconnects instead of electrical ones. Novel integrated photonic technology can offer the bandwidth, energy, footprint, and connectivity credentials required by multi-chip computing architectures. However, there lacks ideal network architecture designs and suitable communication protocols for multi-chip computing systems utilizing the advancement in silicon photonics, which is the main motivation of this project. This project aims at providing low-latency, high-bandwidth, large-scale, and energy-saving photonic Network-on-chip designs for multi-chip computing systems. Paradigm-breaking communication protocols and routing algorithms will be designed for the photonic Network-on-chips. Theoretical calculation and numerical analysis will be the main research methods in this project. With the convincing evidence and hopefully fruitful results, we believe the semiconductor vendors will be interested in the new paradigm of photonic NoC architecture for building new generations of powerful multi-chip processors.
