Model order reduction techniques for the prediction of railway induced vibration in the built environment

The study of traffic induced vibration in the built environment resulted in the development of coupled finite element-boundary element (FE-BE) models that account for dynamic soil-structure interaction (SSI). These models are used to design vibration mitigation measures and to perform environmental impact studies. Parametric studies, performance optimization, or stochastic analysis, however, increase the dimension of the problem and necessitate faster and more efficient calculations. We will tackle the 'curse of dimensionality' by means of model order reduction methods such as Proper Generalized Decomposition (PGD), focusing on the problem of railway induced vibration. We will develop PGD for parametric studies on tracks, for more efficient analysis of wave propagation and dynamic SSI, and for optimizing vibration mitigation in buildings. Hence, we encompass the complete transmission path from source to receiver and the full spectrum of analysis methods, which certainly will find other applications in structural dynamics.
