Project

Measurement and determinants of variety and quality in international trade.

This research project studies variety and quality of international trade. These two phenomena are currently intensively studied in the field of international trade. This project has three specific research aims. First, we intend to inventory and optimize the measurement of variety and quality of international trade. Secondly, the empirical evidence about both phenomena will be reviewed. We do this for various countries and regions as well as for individual industrial sectors. Finally, we contribute to the literature by studying a number of potential determinants of variety and quality of international trade, both theoretically and empirically. More specifically we will concentrate on the role of innovation and technological spillovers, import competition and trade policy.
