Matching skills and work inside organisations: Exploring the phenomenon of contingent internal labour markets.

This study investigates a new work model: contingent internal labour markets (CILMs). CILMs are digital platforms that match employees to part-time work opportunities, posted by colleagues, in other parts of the organisation. They are an essential solution for organisations struggling to match employees with critical skills and work requiring those skills. In view of the post-COVID-19 recovery, CILMs offer a more flexible workforce model to organisations positioning themselves for the future of work. A specific objective of the research project is to write a conceptual article on the functioning and implications of CILMs as a new and more flexible workforce model. Building on current insights in the scientific and business literature, this article will develop a theoretical model on the implications of CILMs for working relationships within organizations as well as for modern forms of human resource management. The focus will be on, among other things, the possibilities and opportunities (e.g., new working relationships and opportunities for processing personnel skills), as well as challenges of this new working model (e.g. tensions within CILMs between different personnel groups). This project will lead to a conceptual scientific article aimed at the Academy of Management Perspectives.
