Project

The Macellum at Sagalassos. A monumental testimonial of socio-economic change.

The project supports ongoing research on the socio-economic evolution of the ancient city of Sagalassos from 180-191 AD, when the food market was built, until the Middle Ages, based on the excavations of the Macellum. The objective of this project is to support the excavations of the Macellum through a detailed study of the finds, a systematic digitalization of the stratigraphy and the structural architectural remains, and the study of artifacts and ecofacts. The project also aims at reconstructing the evolution of the building whose many minor and major adaptations testify to alterations in the antique socio-economic situation. The excavations as well as studies mentioned, can shed light on 'how' and 'why' the layout and function of the food market of Sagalassos changed and how these changes can be related to (the organizaion of) trade activities at Sagalassos. An important question is whether Sagalassos, in the seventh century, at the end of its monumental existence, still possessed a specialized food market.
