John Lydus, "Peri menon". Text, Translation, Commentary

John Lydus' "Peri menon" ("On the Months") is a fragmentary work in ancient Greek on the ancient pagan Roman calendar. Lydus, a professor of Latin at Constantinople, wrote it around 540 A.D. as one of the very latest antique works with a totally pagan character. It is an antiquarian work, which means that it contains a broadly varied collection of older lore, science, superstition, myth and history from both Greek and Latin cultural backgrounds more or less closely connected with the calendar. The aim of this project is to study “On the Months” for the first time in all its aspects with an interdisciplinary approach combining methods from several disciplines. The project will lead to a book containing a new edition of the text, the first usable translation into a modern language and the first linguistic and historical commentary on it. Several independent publications in journals will deal with single questions in more depth than in the book.
