Project

Innovative pretreatment strategies for enhanced resource recovery from organic waste streams (PreTreatWaste)

The overall scientific aim of the project is to create advancements in the effectiveness of pretreatment methods, and to develop and implement advanced pretreatment technology. In order to reach this goal, the following sub-objectives are identified:1.Develop innovative pretreatment strategies, using a combination of chemical, mechanical and/or chemical energy. Evaluation criteria of the effectiveness of the treatment include altered physical and chemical structure of the substrates, production and release of inhibitory/toxic compounds, production and release of high-value compounds and applied energy.2.Integrate separation technology, which enables us to simultaneously produce high-value chemicals and reduce toxicity for subsequent microbial processes.3.Elucidate the effects on MCM processes, with focus on microbial community dynamics, process design and control, kinetics, and modelling aspects, ultimately aiming at maximizing process outputs.4.Evaluate the environmental and economic impact of the developed pretreatment strategies, by making a full life cycle assessment and cost calculation.
