Having a Past and Being a Past. Husserl's Phenomenology of Remembrance

In this project I am developing a phenomenological theory of memory by way of a thorough critique of representationalism, grounded in an engagement with Edmund Husserl’s heretofore-neglected writings on memory. Husserl’s conceptions of intentionality and time-consciousness, as well as his stringent critiques of representationalism in perception, can enable us to theorize the temporal absence that recollection exhibits. This project seeks to respond to pressing theoretical questions in the philosophy of memory by synthesizing a robust phenomenological theory from Husserl’s extensive but scattered analyses of memory.
