Guideline for Construction and Demolition (C&D) Waste Recycling and Management for Fast-Regenerating Districts: Beijing as Case Study

With the Fast urbanization, urban demolition and regeneration is avoidable issue, since old district failed to fulfill gradually increasing demands from local residents as well as construction cannot meet the international specification and local codes any longer; meanwhile pure landfill results in cites are encircled by CDW and eventually polluting urban environment, especially water resource and soil quality. Construction and Demolition Waste (CDW) recycling, known as urban mining, is gradually turning into a principal sustainable method in dealing with CDW. However, CDW plants are underused, since CDW plants are too far from city and meanwhile production scale is hard to be estimated in absence of accurate estimations of CDW generation.

The research topic should be focused on 3 layers: (1) to find out more accurate methods to estimate CDW amount for less-developed and fast-growing cities, taking multiple indicators into accounts, such as land use, FAR etc. (2) to strategically determine the CDW plants distribution layout and scale with the estimation and prediction amount of CDW in Multi-Factor Evaluation and sustainable methods, such as LCA and LCC methods. (3) to provide some methodological options for regenerated district plan how to use recycled material from the sustainable and featured view.
