Flexible coparison of ear biometric features.
In this project fundamental research is conducted to enhance the current basic technique for flexible biometrical ear comparison. More specifically solutions for the following two problems will be explored: the comparison of images of partially visible objects (ears, in casu) and the correct geometric alignment of these images. For that purpose, the team wants to search for new, innovative solutions that result from the combination and integration of techniques for flexible object comparison (which is a speciality of UGent, DDCM) and techniques for (3D) object modelling of anatomic structures (which is a speciality of KULeuven,ESAT/PSI/Medical Image Computing). The K.U.Leuven team has planned the following tasks: construction of a statistical 2D image atlas for automatic detection of characteristic points in 2D ear images, construction of a statistical 3D ear model and fitting of this model to 2D ear images. These techniques will be validated on the basis of an existing database of 3D ear models, which will be extended during this project.
