Effect of prebiotics on the development of asthma and allergy.

The incidence of atopic disease (eczema, rhinitis and asthma) in children is increasing. Decreased microbial exposure at a young age, exposure to environmental chemicals and pollution induce allergic reactions. The gut flora of healthy infants shows differences with allergic infants. The role of probiotics, live microbial food supplements, in the primary prevention of atopic disease in infants will be evaluated in relation to the intestinal flora. The bacterial flora of infants in relation to environmental pressure (metropolitan region versus rural area) and to atopy, to assess the impact of pollutants as inciters of atopic disease and the role of probiotics in counteracting this effect.
