The development of Dutch language acquisition by pupils in Flemish and Dutch education.

In this study a secondary analysis is carried out of relevant research into the development of Dutch language proficiency of pupils in compulsory Flemish and Dutch education. For this purpose, a selection is made of relevant studies that were carried out in Flanders and the Netherlands, and that can provide further insight in (a) the process of Dutch language development, and the distinct phases in the development of several aspects of language acquisition, (b) the question whether certain background variables (such as the gender, socio-economic background and mother tongue of non-native speakers) have an impact on the process of Dutch language development, (c) the impact of education on Dutch language development. A synthesis of the main research results is constructed in terms of 'development lines'; additional (statistical) analyses are carried out on existing databases.
