Project

Determination of active biomechanical properties of middle ear muscles

The goal of this project is to incorporate the biomechanical activity of middle ear muscles in a finite element model of the human middle ear, which has been neglected in models up till now. The middle ear muscles have an important function in the protection of the inner ear against exposure to high sound pressures. To model the middle ear muscles it is very important to know their exact (visco)elastic parameters and the forces they can produce. A very sensitive measurement set-up is required to obtain these parameters.
