Project

Delegation of power and the local representation of the Seleucid dynasty in Babylonia during the Hellenistic period. A study of Greco-Macedonian and Babylonian intermediaries.

The research project reconstructs the intermediary level of administrators and institutions situated between the local inhabitants of Babylonia on the one hand and the Macedonian king on the other. Its focus is twofold: the traditional Babylonian structures inherited from Neo-Babylonian and Persian times and the new Graeco-Macedonian functions, innovations introduced by the new rulers that were largely inspired by functions in use in Macedonia and in the Greek cities. Both Babylonian cuneiform documents and classical sources (inscriptions and classical authors) are studied to obtain a reconstruction of the Babylonian and Graeco-Macedonian intermediary administrators and institutions in Hellenistic Babylonia.
