Data-synchronization middleware for distributed web-applications

Large-scale privacy and trust problems with today's centralized systems, and increased privacy regulations under the form of the GDPR, call for a radical change in data ownership.
People should be able to store data in personal data pods of their choice, connected to the web, and applications should ask for permission to use that data.
This leads to a decentralized network of personal data, where web-applications collect data from multiple sources.
Queries over heterogenous decentralized data pods require a middelware infrastructure to abstract heterogeneity and enablle distributed communication.
There also need to be policy-based user controls to configure data availability, security and privacy.
