Crouching Cow, Killing Dragon. Agenorid Myth in Pseudo-Apollodorus, Bibliotheca, III, 1-56: A Philological Commentary.

</>
</>
The purpose of this doctoral research project is a philological commentary on the third book of Pseudo-Apollodorus' 'Bibliotheca'.</>
Because the 'Bibliotheca' is the only comprehensive manual of Greek mythology that is transmitted to us, it is unique in the mythographic genre (which aims at relaying, paraphrasing and sometimes interpretingmyths, but without much attention to embellishment). Due to its lack ofliterary pretensions modern research seldom shines its light upon the mythographic genre, yet it proves not only to have been of literary consequence (by its interaction with poetry and historiography) but also to have had socio-cultural relevance.</> </>
This project is situated within the larger framework of research carried out in the research unit of Greek Studies, aiming at a synoptic edition, commentary and study of the sources of Pseudo-Apollodorus. Since existing commentaries focus largely on mythological variants, a full-fledged philological commentarywill be a welcome addition to the study of Pseudo-Apollodorus.</>
Special attention goes to Pseudo-Apollodorus' source use versus his own agency and contribution to the organisation of his work, to his diction and usage, to the state of the text and to the later audience of the 'Bibliotheca'. In the commentary the focus lies on the Cretan and Theban myths.</>
