Codes of Ethics for Chaplains in the Care Sector
The general goal of the research project is to improve the quality of codes of ethics for chaplains in the care sector by means of guidelines. This aims at responding to the social challenge to enhance the quality of spiritual care and therefore of integral care, and to prevent ethical misconduct. For this purpose, a selection is made of codes of ethics based on their quality, and of items based on their relevance. Then a thorough analysis and comparison is conducted of the selected items in the selected codes. This analysis is complemented by a study of the same items in the literature on professional ethics for chaplains. On the basis of the analysis and study, a critical ethical evaluation is made of the selected items. This evaluation is carried out from the point of view of the Louvain personalist approach to care ethics. Based on this evaluation, guidelines, including recommendations, are drawn up to improve the quality of codes of ethics, when they are formulated or revised.
