Apoikia and metropolis: research into the earliest Greek colonization (2010-2011)

Research of the mother cities Chalkis (on Euboia) and Cycladic Naxos of the earliest Greek colony of Sicily, Naxos: to what extend did the colony influence the construction of identity in the mother cities? Did she help to crystallize an identity? Was the creation of (imaginary) ties dependant of certain opportunities e.g. the political situation? Or did the colony serve only practical purposes?
