Alternative control methods for Anoplophora glabripennis (ALB) and Anoplophora chinensis (CLB) (FOD-ANOPLOPH)

Main research question/goal

Anoplophora glabripennis (ALB) and Anoplophora chinensis (CLB) are two species of longhorn beetles of deciduous trees from Asia that can be introduced into Europe via plant material or wooden packaging. In recent years, several outbreaks of ALB and CLB have already been observed in our neighboring countries; these beetles have also been intercepted twice in Belgium. For these reasons, there is a very real chance of a future outbreak in our country. Because the possible eradication is drastic and will have a very large economic impact, it is essential to explore possible control techniques. To this end, a computer program is being developed during this project that helps the user to choose the most appropriate control technique.

Research approach

Due to the absence of both longhorn beetle species in Belgium and the extremely high risks associated with the import of these species for scientific purposes, we opt to use the existing information and knowledge for (1) formulating useful guidelines that policy makers can immediately call upon in the event of an outbreak and for an efficient prevention and surveillance strategy, and (2) for developing a computer model that simulates outbreaks of this pest and reflects the effect of different control scenarios. Based on the reported control rate and the related cost estimate, the user can then select the most appropriate scenario.

Relevance/Valorisation

This decision-making tool is aimed primarily at the government and secondly at the sector (mainly tree nurseries and orchards, but also public green space). The computer model indicates how these pests can best be avoided/controlled and calculates the associated costs. The decision-making tool has been distributed among the competent authorities and is available to everyone on request.
