Prevention of Salmonella recrudescense

Recrudescence of Salmonella during stress episodes poses two problems: 1) possible recrudescence of live Salmonella vaccine strains during stress periods (e.g. transportation to the slaughterhouse), which, if applied in food producing animals, may result in contamination of the food chain with the Salmonella vaccine strain. 2) currently available Salmonella vaccines in animals do not claim to confer any protection against stress induced Salmonella recrudescence. A vaccine, capable of inhibiting stress induced recrudescence of Salmonella would be a major step forward. Our invention describes Salmonella genes, responsible for stress induced recrudescence, which may be applied in Salmonella vaccines to solve one or both of the above mentioned problems.
