Organisation profile:

The Department of Private Law consists of six institutes which are responsible for  teaching and research in the wide scope of private law: the Institute for the Law of Obligations, Institute for Family Law and Juvenile Law, Institute for Property Law, Institute for Contract Law, Rector Roger Dillemans Institute for Family Property Law and the Institute of Comparative Law.

Private law is a vast field encompassing several areas of law. Moreover, it is the foundation of our social order. It indicates the rules of how we should behave amongst each other and what we can expect in social interactions. All legal aspects of a human being, from the cradle to the grave, are provided for by private law. Furthermore, not only human beings are governed by private law, but also legal persons and even the government and its political subdivisions. Private law holds a central place in legal science. It is first and foremost a good training for every lawyer, no matter the field of the law in which they will later professionally proceed.

Research covers the field of contracts, family law, law of succession, law of property and torts. Current projects deal with English contract law, filiation, same sex marriages, transsexualism, law of names, distribution of matrimonial assets, human rights and a survey of cases of torts.
