Organisation profile:

KADOC (°1976), the Interfaculty Documentation and Research Centre for Religion, Culture and Society of KU Leuven and one of the leading cultural heritage institutions in Belgium, is dedicated to the safeguarding, optimal management, dynamic retrieval and study of the historical heritage that has emerged from the interaction between religion, culture and society in the 19th and 20th centuries. Its collection and research activities focus on Flanders/Belgium, but it has also developed an international profile. The vast KADOC collection and extensive heritage expertise relates to the history of churches and religious institutes, civil society and politics, social history, migration and emancipation, education and care, youth and volunteer movements, as well as to the societal importance of many other civil society structures.

Over the last past decades, KADOC has developed into a renowned research institution of national and growing international importance. The Centre not only fulfils pivotal functions fostering multidisciplinary research, but also carries out its own research programs, usually with a comparative or interdisciplinary and international slant. KADOC positions itself as an academic agora, bringing scholars and societal actors from various backgrounds together in order to collaborate in joint (individual and collective) research initiatives. These include both fundamental and applied research projects, which have resulted in many different publications, for instance in the book series KADOC Studies on Religion, Culture and Society (Leuven University Press / Cornell University Press)
