Organisation profile:

Research in the early modern history section focuses on the Low Countries between 1500 and 1800 in the wider context of Europe (the Habsburg empires) and the world (the Iberian global empires). Methodologically, comlex analytic models are privileged for the study of governmental and organisational structures (Leuven University, the Inquisition, Church-State relations, diplomatic culture), cultural exchange (images and imaginations of overseas cultures, the printed book), the economic (business cycles, money and credit) and social development (craft associations, standard of living, consumption), historical-anthropologic topics (the body, emotions) en the position of religion in society (Catholic Reformation, witches).
