Data-analysis and Modelling

Research Group

Lifecycle:1 Jan 2002 →  30 Sep 2009
Organisation profile:The research of the Data Analysis and Modeling (DAM) group is based on research activities of two institutes: IMOB and part of KIZOK. The research activities of IMOB are consequently structured in three research programs, namely Traffic Safety, Transportation and Logistics. ┘ In the field of Traffic Safety, research is carried out at the Macroscopic and the Micro- and Mesoscopic level. Macroscopic traffic safety models are studied, aimed at planning, explaining and predicting traffic safety. Micro- and Mesoscopic models on the other hand, are used to assess the impact of infrastructure, land use and road user behaviour on traffic safety. ┘ In the domain of Transportation, IMOB focuses on Transportation Modelling. The Transportation Modelling programme aims at representing the travel behaviour of people in a model structure by using activity-based transportation models. This enables one to predict future developments in travel behaviour and to estimate the effect of policy measures. ┘ Next to expertise in passenger traffic, the Transportation Research Institute also gathers knowledge in the research field of Logistics and Organisation of freight transport. Freight transport and passenger transport are inextricably linked. The combination of both research areas can create a surplus value in transportation research. The research activities of the KIZOK researchers in DAM focus on two particular domains in entrepreneurship and innovation: ┘ The first research domain focuses on the development and improvement of Microeconom(etr)ic Determinants that describe and explain Entrepreneurship & Innovation in SMEs. Two particular research objectives concern capturing the heterogeneity in the behaviour of SMEs and assessing the additionality of policy support measures to SMEs. In terms of techniques, special attention is paid to recent and new developments with respect to Bayesian en Entropy econometrics, sample-selection models, etc. ┘ The second research domain goes into the Geography of Entrepreneurship and Innovation in SMEs. This domain of economic geography or spatial economics studies the complex relationship between the firm and its environment. Firm performances are affected by the context (condition of infrastructure, size of job market, policies with respect to starting companies, ╝) in which they work and vice versa. In this domain, special attention is paid to the relationship of the environment on entrepreneurship and innovation in SMEs (e.g. the impact of financial constraints on the innovative capabilities of SMEs). The research of the Data Analysis and Modeling (DAM) group is based on kwantitative analysis methods such as (1) data mining, (2) multivariate statistics, (3) econometrics and (4) operational research.
