Project

Artificial self-dividing cell

The outline of thesis dissertation would be split in 3 main sections. Each one of them advancing the understanding and methodologies for creating a self-dividing artificial cell. First part would be understanding the cell cycle dynamics of the droplets of cell free extract from Xenopus frog eggs. Concentration of different intracellular components and the size of the droplets would be adjusted for the purposes of optimizing the oscillation of cell cycle phases. In second part we would focus on creating a complex biomimetic membrane, that would enable reconstruction of structured cytoskeleton necessary for cell division. And in phase three we would focus on studying the cell cycle dynamics of cell-free extracts compartmentalized in a biomimetic membrane to see if we can create a self-dividing artificial cell.
