Sustainable use of sand in nature-based solutions - SUSANA (SUSANA)

The aim of SUSANA is to develop a coupled ES (ecosystem services) model to assess and compare the ES in the NBS (nature-based solutions) with the ES at the sand extraction sites. The model to be developed enables an analysis from a system perspective across the entire impact zone of NBS. Specific attention is paid to the dune-by-dyke principle as a work case. It investigates how alternative sand sources influence the ecosystem functions that support dune development and that provide the main ES in the coastal area, i.e. vegetation development, aeolian transport and dune erosion, and their mutual interactions.
