Project

Vibration-based assessment of concrete structures after fire

In this PhD project, the candidate will develop new methodologies for assessing the state and performance of existing structures, based on a combination of detailed numerical modeling of the static and dynamic behavior and advanced experimental techniques such as dynamic fiber-optic strain sensing. On the numerical modeling side, challenges include the accurate yet computationally efficient representation of degradation and of interactions with the environment. On the experimental side, the main challenge is the conversion of the raw data stream into more informative features with a direct physical interpretation. The incorporation of the experimental information into the numerical model is expected to lead to a high-fidelity digital twin that accurately represents the health and performance of the structure. As detailed application, the assessment of structural damage after a fire event is targeted.
