Flexibility pays off: The impact of CEO remuneration on strategic flexibility and firm performance

The project zooms into different elements of a CEO remuneration package and study how they may interact in driving or constraining firm strategic flexibility. Moreover, we will adopt a novel approach that disentangles the strategic flexibility construct into its two main components that are the variety ofstrategic actions and the shifts in strategic actions. The reason for doing so is that variety and shifts in strategic actions may 1) refer to different CEO behaviours that require different incentives, and 2) lead to different effects on firm performance depending on the frequency, intensity and unpredictability of industry change. Adopting such differentiated approach will thus allow us to draw nuanced conclusions on the effect of CEO remuneration on firm performance in different market contexts.
