Cascaded EXtraction of Antibacterial ComponenTs from brown seaweeds (EXACT)

Currently, the use of seaweed has been mainly limited to generic applications in the food and feed industry. Recently, an increasing focus is now placed on the production of high-value products such as: high- end additives and pharmaceutical excipients (fucoidan, laminarin) which may make the seaweed value chain cost-effective. However, the extraction of these valuable compounds on an industrial scale is still limited because of the numerous processing steps are necessary that require extensive water, chemical andenergy consumption, and the fact that these extraction processes are mostly focused on a certain compound, rather than a cascading approach. This project aims therefore at developing a cascading approach using the waste stream of fucoidan/laminarin extraction (using ultrasonics and microwave technology).
