The global rise of modern borders and irregular maritime migration networks (1882-1938): comparing Atlantic with Pacific migration systems

The project analyzes the establishment of global racial barriers on migration, the formation of irregular migration networks, the attempts by states to regulate migration transnationally and the central role of shipping companies in this process during the first period of accelerated globalization (1882-1938). It compares this for Pacific and Atlantic migration to the US and how this affected migration policies in the Americas.
