Synthesis and biological evaluation of new beta-lactam containing inhibitors of penicillin-binding proteins from resistant bacteria.

To identify novel potential antibiotics, the PBP’s catalyzing the peptidoglycan biosynthesis are targeted, especially the transpeptidase function. Strategies for the inhibitor discovery involve computational techniques, chemical synthesis of potential inhibitors and their structural, biochemical, antimicrobial and toxicological evaluation. This will involve a collaboration with the universities of Ljubljana and Liège.
