Rational design of mesoporous boron nitride adsorbents for the removal of emerging organic pollutants from water.

Porous boron nitride is, due to Porous boron nitride is, due to its unique physical and chemical properties, a very promising adsorbent. Moreover, by using a sustainable and economically attractive synthesis, it can become a competitor for the widely used activated carbon. This synthesis will be systematically optimized with respect to its material characteristics, such as specific surface area, pore volume and diameter, and functional groups on the surface. Moreover, insight in the effect of synthesis parameters on the material characteristics will be gained. The boron nitride will be subsequently used as adsorbent for the removal of emerging micropollutants from water, which is a rapidly emerging global problem. Because it would be a timeconsuming and expensive process to experimentally determine the adsorption removal for every individual micropollutant, a representative set of micropollutants will be selected to assess their adsorption removal. The effect of material characteristics and micropollutant properties on the adsorption performance will be investigated systematically to find the optimal material characteristics for efficient adsorption of the selected variety of micropollutants.its unique physical and chemical properties, a very promising adsorbent.
