Survival of the fittest. Party entry and exit in Western Europe, 1945-2015

Party systems differ considerably regarding the entry of new parties and exit of existing ones. This study focusses on15 Western European countries between 1945 and 2015. Party entry and exit is explained by means of a new measure of party system saturation indicating whether more or less parties contest elections than predicted based on the carrying capacity of the system.
