Development and evaluation of a self-regulation-based eHealth and mHealth intervention to promote physical activity: testing under controlled and real life conditions

Interventions focusing on the promotion of healthy behaviours play a major role in reducing
diseases and illnesses. Studies have shown that computer-tailored interventions can be effective in
changing health behaviour. These interventions allow a personalized approach by making use of
interactive technologies(e.g. Internet). Although a large number of people can be reached through
Internet, the percentage of individuals who start with an internet-delivered intervention is low. So,
new ways for delivery need to be examined, such as mobile applications(apps), that are engaging,
motivating and useful. Apps are popular and many are freely available, but most apps are not
theory based. In this project we develop an app “MyPlan” based upon self-regulation theories.
According to these models, behaviour change is best achieved by selecting and setting a goal,
planning actions to pursue the goal, and by monitoring and evaluating behaviour changes. The aim
of this study is to further develop “MyPlan”, and to investigate the effectiveness of ‘My Plan’ and its
core elements.
