Talent-in-waiting: The Making of Song High Officials, 960-1279

This study focuses on the extended collective effort to cultivate high officials for sustaining government leadership in Song times. It concerns the institutional basis of this effort and perceptions of “talent” (rencai 人才) that members of the bureaucracy assumed were critical to governance of empire so as to propel them to support this line of high official cultivation. More importantly, the study analyzes how these two factors shaped each other and evolved over time.
