Project

Processing, properties and characteristics of steels used in the electricity sector (CONACYT)

Objectives
A. To establish a partnership between Mexican and European institutions interested in deepening into the knowledge regarding the processing and improvement of the steel destined to the electrical sector. The alliance will carry out studies on the complete processing route of these steels, from their fusion, to the manufacture of the final products. The participation of academics and industrials during the various stages of the project will be implemented. The expertise and knowledge of specialists of the four participating countries will contribute to the solution of common problems. The project will enable the formation of highly qualified human resources at the diverse participating universities in the solution of the problems presented during the implementation of the project.
B. Determine the effect of the diverse process variables involved from the fusion to the final product obtained by the steel manufacturer. The effect of impurities present in the material to fuse, the content of interstitial elements and its process of elimination, the effect of the heating sequence and the hot reduction, the cold rolling shedule, including the annealing. The environmental conditions effects on the oxidation will be analyzed in order to optimize the electrical isolation between reductions. The formation of the main research groups on steel processing been has based on the improvement and optimization of the structural steel production, in which the mechanical properties are very important. The concept of manufacture of steel for the electrical sector is divergent at this point, because what is considered suitable for structural steels, it is not for reducing magnetic losses or the facility to magnetize the steel.
C. To study the effect of the magnetic properties and the assembly and geometry of the rolling in the electrical devices. The dependency between the microstructural characteristics of the rolled products and their magnetic properties will be evaluated, the means of measuring the magnetic properties will be analyzed and the trend in which they vary with respect to the reference used. The effect the form and geometry exert of the rolling will be analyzed, was well as the cutting offect on the properties of the final product.
D. To model, to simulate and to predict the characteristics and properties of the steel through its process route. The information generated in the previous points will be compiled to obtain the mathematical models for predicting the material behavior during its processing and in the electrical devices. Electric steel manufacture processes will be optimized based on the characteristics and properties demanded by the sector. Models that account the effects of residual elements in the scrap and the manner of processing steel at high temperatures in the intercritical interval without the risk of cracking on the edges will be developed.
