Analysis of an epistemology of listening in educational and social science research

How would educational and social science research look differently if we worked with a sufficiently rich idea of what it means to listen? What warrants may such research have other than the kinds that echo those of the 'hard' scientist, the statistician and the epidemiologist? Can literature and literary criticism offer an epistemological paradigm for understanding people and communities?
