IOF POC Project SMART TOWERS: Low-cost IOT monitoring solution combined with a cloud data platform for structural integrity monitoring of civil structure such as transmission towers. (IOFPOC52)

The aim is to develop a low-cost and low-power IoT sensor, based on sensitive accelerometers and embedded data processing algorithms, that allow to monitor the structural integrity of structures. To assure the structural data gets to all stakeholders in near-real time the sensor will be combined with a scalable data pipeline in the cloud, providing easy access to all data for further analysis and improved O&M decision support. The project serves to develop this technology into an integrated solution at a much lower cost and yet is able to detect changes over time, compare behaviour of likely structures within the fleet and assess the structural reliability of each asset. As a first application we primarily consider transmission towers, but other applications of this low cost monitoring solution for civil structures are likely (including onshore turbines, stadia, bridges, waterlocks ,…).
