The Social Mobility of the Chungin in Chosŏn Korea (1392-1910): from the Perspective of Official Interpreters

This study sheds light on the social mobility of the chungin (“middle people”) in the Chosŏn dynasty, with a particular focus on the upward mobility of official interpreters (yŏkkwan). By examining variables affecting the social status of the chungin, such as birth, degree, economic capital, social networks, this research provides an in-depth insight into how the secondary group emerged and mobilized in the social stratification of the Chosŏn dynasty.
