Project

Teacher working conditions and wellbeing mediated by SDT basic needs fulfilment.

This research project will investigate how the way teachers' work is organised affects (or enhances) their perceived autonomy and collaboration with colleagues. These two factors are in turn believed to have an impact on teachers' work-related well-being. This PhD project will use a mixed-methods approach to best capture the complexity of the research phenomenon and contribute to new knowledge development. Different epistemological perspectives will be integrated. This in turn will allow the researcher to study the primary conditions that influence teachers' perceived autonomy, collaboration with colleagues, and their general sense of well-being. Quantitative data will be collected using a longitudinal questionnaire design, following teachers over time to detect possible changes in key variables. The qualitative part of the research will use a phenomenological-hermeneutic approach, drawing on the contributions of Clinical Sociology, which will make it possible to understand the nature of this phenomenon and its complexity. The first part of this work will be completed at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile. During this period, a systematic literature review and data collection will be completed. Once at KU Leuven, this work will be complemented with any insights that the Research Group on Professional Education & Development and Lifelong Learning can provide to this research. The analysis of the data will be carried out at KU Leuven. Finally, the conclusions and future trajectories and limitations of the research will be written once back in Chile, under the supervision of both supervisors, respectively in Chile and Belgium.
