Project

Physical activity in patients with respiratory disease and lung transplantation.

This doctoral project consists of 4 topics. The first one consists of measuring daily physical activity one year after lung transplantation. Levels of daily physical activity were compared between lung transplant recipients and candidates and healthy, age matched control subjects. Relationships of daily activity with physical fitness, quality of life and mood status have been studied.  A second topic deals with the effects of rehabilitation in lung recipients. Two studies looked into the effects of early rehabilitation following lung transplantation on peripheral muscle force, exercise capacity and daily activities. A third topic handles the validation of activity monitors to measure physical activities in daily life This study looked into the accuracy of activity monitors to assess postures, movements and energy expenditure during daily activities in patients with chronic lung diseases. A last topic is the development of a clinical practice guideline for physiotherapists treating patients with COPD.
