Project

Real-time process monitoring for part geometry estimation in CNC milling

The proposed approach focuses on the development of innovative methodology for capturing the dimensional information of a workpiece during processing, and exploiting the digital twin for the machining process compatible with the integrated model for manufacturing quality information, i.e., ISO standards ISO 23952:2020. The approach consists of three main elements. The first element is hybrid sensing of part geometry by developing tool holder and algorithms for information processing on the edge computer with low latency communication protocols. In the second part of the approach, the in-process comparison of the measured part geometry with the targeted CAD model is made for evaluating the part quality. The final stage is the development of a digital twin framework to manage the production quality information for industrial applications. The approach provides solutions to manufacturing companies for improving the efficiency in production by reducing the metrology efforts and gives an important contribution to the paradigm shift of digitalization in manufacturing.
