Scientific basis for the delineation process of protected and strictly protected nature - Pledge 2022

In the European Biodiversity Strategy, the European Commission requests the designation of protected and strictly protected natural areas.
By the end of 2022, ANB must submit the so-called 'pledge' to the European Commission. In this pledge, Flanders indicates how we will contribute to the realisation of the European biodiversity objective to have 30% protected nature (of which 1/3rd strictly protected) by 2030.

INBO provides the scientific basis that can be used in the delimitation process. For this purpose, we first provide a ‘card index' with a collection of maps on current and potential nature values (species, habitats, ecosystems, ecosystem services), landscape-ecological relationships, maps indicating nature management and maps indicating the legal protection level.

In a second step, we analyse the possibilities and obstacles to the realisation of a contiguous nature network. We also examine to what extent the spatial visions that were developed during the AGNAS process (delineation of the areas of the natural and agricultural structure) suffice to achieve the nature network.
