Listing of knowledge gaps and development of a draft scientific research agenda for defragmentation policy in Flanders

In recent years there has been a considerable amount of international research within the field of population dynamics and genetics into the effects of fragmentation on the viability of populations. Various monitoring projects have also been conducted to evaluate the effect of wildlife bridges and other defragmentation measures introduced in Flanders. In addition, steps have been taken to develop decision-making tools for the identification of priorities in the context of defragmentation policy. But there is also a need to integrate knowledge from population dynamics, landscape ecology, ethology and genetics in these decision-making tools. The integration of this knowledge in the methodological design of science-based monitoring projects on the effects of wildlife bridges also poses major challenges for the near future. Finally, in order to perform defragmentation initiatives in the future in a way that is both supported and efficient, it is also important to take economic and social factors into account in assessment frameworks.
