Human African Trypanosomiasis: meeting the experts on trypanotolerance and animal reservoir (EMAR)

The proposed work focuses on the elimination and eventual zero transmission of T.b. gambiense HAT in the absence of tsetse eradication and safe treatment that can be administered to non-parasitologically confirmed persons with suspicion of T.b. gambiense infection. In this context, it is essential to have an updated comprehensive view on human trypanotolerance, in terms of genetic background, immunology, epidemiology and diagnostic profile, and on the epidemiology and diagnostic challenges related to a putative animal reservoir of T.b. gambiense. Only with this background information, it will be possible to develop efficient strategies towards sustainable elimination and in the long term zero transmission of the disease.
