Project

Research, ex situ breeding and introduction common spadefoot toad

This project implements the Species Protection Programme (SPP) common spadefoot toad 2017-2021 (approved December 19th 2016). The common spadefoot toad is a critically endangered species in Flanders. The SPP includes an ex situ breeding programme, to prevent local extinction of the species. To reinforce existing populations and to create new populations, egg strands are reared under optimal growth conditions. INBO takes care of the breeding activities (incl. genetic research) and develops and advises on an introduction strategy, in order to achieve the conservation goals set for this species.
