Project

A paradigm shifting treatment the most common indication of visual impairment.

Globally, the most prevalent causes for visual impairment are refractive errors as a result of aberrant corneal curvature or ocular axial length. The current treatment options include wearing spectacles or contact lenses, or undergoing laser refractive surgery, however these treatments are all prone to practical inconveniences or post-operative complications. Additionally, not all refractive errors can be treated using these therapeutic modalities. In this project, the scientific foundations of an innovative ocular medical device are established that can overcome the therapeutic limitation and practical inconveniences. This invention aims to treat patients with an aberrant corneal curvature by means of innovative biomaterials. A panel of biomaterials will be tested for their essential properties to function as a future treatment modality. These results will be converted to a broad scientific base as a preparation to a patent application.
