Pilot Activity 1.1.1 - Survey of Sustainability Assessment Methods

Book - Report

Subtitle:TempAg Network - Theme1: Delivering Resilient Agricultural Production Systems at Multiple Levels
TempAg is an international research network for agricultural research in temperate climates. The consortium has launched three pilot activities: (1) a survey of experts and the literature to identify concepts of sustainability, how it is currently measured and which indicators are important; (2) a stocktaking exercise to overview ecosystem services to and from different agricultural production systems and in different scales; and (3) a modelling exercise to identify the reasons for yield gaps.
This report describes Pilot Activity 1.1.1 and its results. First we made an inventory of sustainability frameworks, metrics and tools, and made a selection within this inventory of tools to be surveyed with the developers and/or users. We also performed a literature study on the characteristics that are used to describe sustainability assessment methods, selected the most relevant ones and based our survey on these characteristics. The report shows the survey results: general assessment characteristics reported by the respondents, stakeholder participation during development and implementation, and information related to the indicators used in the assessments. Finally we tried to establish how this information can help to unravel the question how sustainability frameworks, metrics and tools and their implementation can be enhanced to futureproof agricultural decision making at multiple levels and multiple scales.
