Project

Combining transistors and porous crystals to sense volatile organic compounds in air

In this PhD, we will develop a novel thin-film VOC detector based on MOFs as capture material and on a Field Effect Transistor to transduce the changes in the MOF dielectric constant and/or electrode work function into an electrical signal. For the fabrication of the sensor, MOFs will be integrated into a thin film integrated circuit device using microelectronics-compatible methods for its processing and patterning. Understanding the mechanisms underlying analyte absorption dynamics in the MOF pores and signal transduction physics upon exposure to different VOCs will help optimize the sensitivity, selectivity and lifetime of the novel sensors.
